Analysis of defect structure in silicon. Characterization of samples from UCP ingot 5848-13C
Statistically significant quantitative structural imperfection measurements were made on samples from ubiquitous crystalline process (UCP) Ingot 5848 - 13 C. Important trends were noticed between the measured data, cell efficiency, and diffusion length. Grain boundary substructure appears to have an important effect on the conversion efficiency of solar cells from Semix material. Quantitative microscopy measurements give statistically significant information compared to other microanalytical techniques. A surface preparation technique to obtain proper contrast of structural defects suitable for QTM analysis was perfected
Analysis of defect structure in silicon. Characterization of SEMIX material. Silicon sheet growth development for the large area silicon sheet task of the low-cost solar array project
Statistically significant quantitative structural imperfection measurements were made on samples from ubiquitous crystalline process (UCP) Ingot 5848 - 13C. Important correlation was obtained between defect densities, cell efficiency, and diffusion length. Grain boundary substructure displayed a strong influence on the conversion efficiency of solar cells from Semix material. Quantitative microscopy measurements gave statistically significant information compared to other microanalytical techniques. A surface preparation technique to obtain proper contrast of structural defects suitable for quantimet quantitative image analyzer (QTM) analysis was perfected and is used routinely. The relationships between hole mobility and grain boundary density was determined. Mobility was measured using the van der Pauw technique, and grain boundary density was measured using quantitative microscopy technique. Mobility was found to decrease with increasing grain boundary density

A Survey of Laboratory Programs for First Year Medical Students
Basic science courses offered to freshmen medical students have been traditionally taught by didactic presentations and laboratory work. Various factors have prompted many departments to either markedly reduce the time allotted for the traditional, but more vulnerable, laboratory phase of these courses or drastically alter the content of the laboratory programs. Information concerning the desirability for such changes is incomplete and no evaluation has been developed to determine the effectiveness of change. Before beginning any further alterations in the laboratory programs at the Medical College of Virginia, it seemed desirable to determine anew what we wish to teach in the laboratory. This problem was approached in part by surveying the attitudes of other anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology departments
Lecanicephalidean (Cestoda) fauna of the giant freshwater whipray, Himantura polylepis (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae), from Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo.
Eight species of dasyatid stingrays (Myliobatiformes) are characterized as freshwater obligate, including the giant freshwater whipray (Himantura polylepis), comprising at least three separate incursions into freshwater habitats. However, a tolerance of estuarine environments has been suggested for H. polylepis. Eight individuals of this species were collected between 2003 and 2009 at two sites in Borneo [six from the Kinabatangan River (Malaysia) and two from Tarakan (Indonesia)]; these host specimens were examined for lecanicephalidean cestodes. Collectively, these hosts were parasitized by eight species of lecanicephalidean tapeworms: three new species of Tetragonocephalum, three new species of Polypocephalus, and one species each of two as of yet undescribed genera. This brings the total number of reported cestodes from H. polylepis to 18 species in nine genera of four orders. Of the nine total genera parasitizing H. polylepis, one is unique while seven are collectively also found parasitizing marine and euryhaline dasyatid hosts. In contrast, the South American freshwater potamotrygonids are parasitized by a total of seven genera; three of these are unique to potamotrygonids while four genera also parasitize marine stingrays. The similarity of the cestode assemblage of the giant freshwater whipray to that of its marine and euryhaline relatives might be one of several lines of evidence to support the notion that this stingray may not be restricted to freshwater
A Model for Solid He: II
We propose a simple Ginzburg-Landau free energy to describe the magnetic
phase transition in solid He. The free energy is analyzed with due
consideration of the hard first order transitions at low magnetic fields. The
resulting phase diagram contains all of the important features of the
experimentally observed ph ase diagram. The free energy also yields a critical
field at which the transition from the disordered state to the high field state
changes from a first order to a second order one.Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in Journal of Low

Multiplex coherent raman spectroscopy detector and method
A multiplex coherent Raman spectrometer (10) and spectroscopy method rapidly detects and identifies individual components of a chemical mixture separated by a separation technique, such as gas chromatography. The spectrometer (10) and method accurately identify a variety of compounds because they produce the entire gas phase vibrational Raman spectrum of the unknown gas. This is accomplished by tilting a Raman cell (20) to produce a high-intensity, backward-stimulated, coherent Raman beam of 683 nm, which drives a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (28) to produce a broadband beam of 1100-1700 nm covering a range of more than 3000 wavenumber. This broadband beam is combined with a narrowband beam of 532 nm having a bandwidth of 0.003 wavenumbers and focused into a heated windowless cell (38) that receives gases separated by a gas chromatograph (40). The Raman radiation scattered from these gases is filtered and sent to a monochromator (50) with multichannel detection
